Tarbiyatul Awlad

Development of Religions - Introduction

The holy Quran stated about one religion that is meant for all mankind. Being the only Holy Scripture that talks about religion other than Islam depicts its universality and uniqueness in its content. The only religion that is approved by God is Islam while all other claimed religions are considered false religion.

Quran stated that God only send one religion with messengers as a mean to deliver the message of truth. Those messages are all the same in terms of aqidah which is belief in one God who created everything in this universe, to worship only Him and not to associate with any other creations.

Initially human started with believing in one God but after some time, they started to practice polytheism. From time to time, people of different tribes tend to deviate from true religion and thus the reason of God continuously send His messengers as guidance to human being. All prophets and messengers were given the same message but the difference between all the messages that were sent was only the matter of shari’ah which differs from each other to relevantize the people of certain time but the aqidah is still the same. Initially people were guided but after some events misled by other factors such as culture demand and lack of conviction and commitment to the religion. Messengers were continuously sent by Allah for man to be guided from Adam a.s. to the last and final messenger and prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.

True religion does not develop and will never develop as there is only one true religion till the end of time. The polytheists were responsible by making people deviated from true teaching of religion for example Judaism and Christianity. They claimed to be revealed religion though now they are far deviated from truth that was sent by prophets. The Quran addressed the religion before the coming of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him as ‘Hanif’. Though it is differ from the term ‘Islam’, it still delivers the same message as Islam.

There is an assumption that says Islam developed from Christianity and Christianity developed from Judaism. This Is not true when initially there is only Islam. The followers are actually made the holy religion distorted by changing the scripture, add and discard whatever they like. They are driving people into destruction, far from the truth. They, especially the Jews even killed the Prophets which shows their rejection of what was being delivered to them.

The main factor of misguidance and the birth of false religions is that people tend to blend both culture and truth. Different tribe has different culture and it is an element that is hard to draw off especially after the message of truth had come to them which subsequently requires them to eliminate whatever culture and tradition that clashes to shari’ah.  One that does not contrary to shari’ah is allowed to be practiced.

Part of negative tradition is worshipping idols which clearly against the shari’ah to associate something other than Allah. People of the past would tend to adopt elements that are close to them or something that they could see with their bare vision. Since they could not see God, they tend to create an image or symbol as a manifestation of God. The practice was then developed from believing that it was a manifestation of God to believing that the idols are gods. This is when deviation starts to occur and polytheism became practice which led to total digression.

Consequently, false religions began to appear due to development caused by human itself. True religion never developed as it does not influence by distortion. Whereas only false religions – which actually invented by human – continue to develop as time goes by.

My IIUM Literature Review Presentation

Assalamualaikum and a very good morning to all our fellow classmates and miss Hana Imelda. inshaAllah we are going to present on our research paper, a study on the relationship between family income and religiosity among iium undergraduate students.

There have been numerous studies which suggests that income affects the degree of one’s religiosity, with an inclination that high incomes discourage religious participation by encouraging individuals to substitute market work for religious activities (General Issue)A survey done by Herzer and Strulik (2013) in the United States shows that there is a co-integration relationship between family income and religious adherence and “that a 1% increase in the log of income per capita is associated with a decline in church attendance by about 9%.” The causation of income influencing religious adherence plays a pivotal role in our daily life, since 84% of the global population subscribe to a particular faith or religious group[1]

So Family income here we refer to money income that includes dividends, earnings, interest, or anything shared by a family and lives in the same standard while religiosity is defined as a number of dimensions associated with religious beliefs and involvement

Theory? A theory suggests that Income has an adverse impact on one's level of religiosity

So the Lesser income actually leads to a higher degree of religiosity

And Higher income, leads to a lesser degree of religiosity

with the supporting literature of The pioneer works of Azzi and Ehrenberg (1975) discovered the casual relationship that a high wage rate decreases church membership, insinuating the inclination of individuals to substitute their time for the pursuit of market activities instead of religious activities when the opportunity costs of the latter is higher. In that regard, Jody W. Lipford and Robert D. Tollison (2002) argued that an expansion of income deters religious participation by “inducing a substitution between market-earnings and religious activities”. This is attributed to the high opportunity costs of religious activities which reduces the time and effort available for monetary purposes. Additionally, they contend that religious objectives “can only be achieved with financial support”, implying that the latter is a precursor for the attainment of religious aims.

The previous studies are mostly based on western point of view and focused on individual income, also there are varying metrics of measurement for religiosity, and the degree of influence varies with the ideological basis and context of different religion, as well as the classification of income as self-motivated, so that is why we engage in this research because we want to know the relationship between two variables through Islamic point of view as well as using family income since students generally do not hold full time jobs and out target are students of iium from various nationalities and family background

Therefore in this research we seek to answer these questions. Firstly whether family income affects religiosity of iium students? And if yes, does it bring positive or negative impact?

So My teammate ahmad tarmizi will continue on research methodology as well as the findings. Thank you

Think We Don't Have Enough Time? We do!

I came to experience new things  ever since I graduated from college. One of the things knowing people! Part time jobs, freelancing are the things I'm currently doing, being in the process of improving my social skills and develop my character (?) - I mean more of getting to know myself and what I'm capable of doing. So all these experience are somewhat helping to find myself and settle with something I really want for my future (sort of) career.

Home tutoring is one of the skills I need to improve in as this is one of the things I want to make out the most. I see students having trouble in reciting Iqra' (Quranic recitation knowledge for beginners). That's okay for me though it's normal during the process of learning. However, after knowing that they have been 'stuck' in the same level for quite a while, I got to say to the teacher that they need practice at home. Class is not the place for practice. You learn in class, you practice at home.

"They never practice at home"

Oh well I guess they tend to forget or just keep it aside and have the thought that it is less important. Maybe. But then to be honest, parents really really play important role in encouraging their kids into learning Quranic recitation.

"You need to talk to their parents about this. Let them know it's important to practice at home"

"I did. But they tend to make excuses that the kids have no time for it. They're busy with tuition and stuff"

I kinda understand that these kids especially nowadays they are packed with so many activities that school has to offer. O-kay.

This reminds me of Sheikh Mohamad Aslam's talk that I attended in UIA. Sheikh was asked, how do we balance our time between deen, family and work? We can. Obviously we can only if we prioritise all those three in our lives. If we perceive them as important in our lives, regard as an obligation and know our responsibility in them, we wake up knowing we need to work on those three today, everything will come into place. Have the mindset and you definitely will do the things you need to do.

Yup, we always argue for not having enough time for everything. But, believe it or not, it's not about the time. It's about priority. List the things you really need to do and accomplish, set some goals and timeline. Keep in your mind that these things are important, "I need to do this" and "they are my priority".

If you failed to do the things you listed, it somehow shows the results of them not being your priority. Well, not enough to reach priority level. heh. Try it!
